So a huge amount (as much as 35 million page views a month) of online inventory just opened up…well, it will, once BBC starts taking ads on the international versions of its homepage and News website. It has already announced intentions, and is now polling outside users on it. A number of potential designs have been prepared to demonstrate ways in which banners and other branded boxes could be added to the top, bottom and side of headline and story pages on the BBC News website and BBC homepage. One of them is here.
“The BBC’s website has become an important source of news and information for international users as well as those in the UK. However, they are paid for entirely by the UK licence fee and taxpayer,” said Richard Sambrook, director of the BBC’s Global News Division…”Any proposal to introduce advertising to the News site would follow a vigorous internal approval process before it could be implemented”.
I am at the We Media Global forum next week in London, and this should come up as a dicussion point…I’ll report more from there
