An unexplained outage at nytimes.com Wednesday evening lasted at least three hours and involved related sites including the corporate nytco.com and subscription site timesselect.com. No response from two efforts to reach corporate PR. Also, no message to users from anyone at the site. The only clue so far: a DNS error that showed up in the front-page video space as the site was coming back online. As you know, we can empathize with sites experiencing technical difficulties but it’s hard to understand how one of the top ten most-visited sites could have an outage of that length and not offer users even a cursory apology or explanation within hours of going back online.
