Reliance Communications To Push Data Services In Rural Areas

Business Standard: Reliance Communications Ventures Ltd is going against the popular belief that rural population require only voice services and not data. The company thinks there are enough takers for its high-end internet and mobile content in the deep pockets of India’s hinterlands.
In presentations to analysts and investors, the company gave a glimpse of its plans. It is looking at offering an integrated bundle of broadband services to a customer at his house for which he need not fork out more than $ 30.60 (Rs 1400) a month. This will entitle him basic interent access, security services, personal web and storage, voice services, IPTV services, webcam and even video phone services.
Its network is currently available in over 240,000 towns and villages across the country constituting about 42 per cent of the rural population. But by the end of the year, it wants to nearly double the rural coverage to 400,000 villages, which is about 50 per cent of the rural population.
