Maxtor and Plextor are big names in the hard drive arena and both have recently announced new families of portable hard drives. The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition drive weighs about 7 ounces and comes fully loaded with software to provide automated backups, encryption, data synchronization, and system rollback. The OneTouch Mini has rubber bumpers all around and comes with Maxtor DriveLock, which denies access should the drive ever be lost or stolen. The Maxtor comes in either 60 GB or 100 GB capacities and will retail for $149.95 and $199.95, respectively.
The Plextor PX-SP is a family of shock-proof portable drives that weigh in at just under 8 ounces. The drives have a silicon jacket bumper that Plextor claims makes the drives shock-proof if dropped. The PX-SP series will ship in May 2006 and come in 80 GB and 120 GB capacities, prices at $169 and $260, respectively.
