Media, Tech Firms Warn About New EU Digital Media Regulation Rules

We’ve written about this in some detail in the past…now finally the media and telecom firms have voiced some protest in the open. The alliance of companies, including ITV, Yaho, Vodafone, Intel, and Cisco warned a European Commission proposal to impose rules for traditional broadcasters on new media providers could have “unintended consequences” and hurt investment.
The legislation proposed in December aims to level the playing field by applying the same rules to all forms of media, including digital media, but the opposition is that online and mobile video cannot be judged by the same rules as traditional TV. “Citizen media such as blogs, video-casts and the like are one of the most exciting developments enabled by new technology. This phenomenon has the potential to create new businesses…but this proposed regulation severely risks stunting its growth,” the joint statement from these companies said.
IDG: E.U. recommends applying a basic set of minimum principles such as rules designed to protect minors, prevent incitement to racial hatred, and outlaw certain types of advertising. The idea is to harmonize a minimum set of rules to allow companies to deliver on-demand video services across Europe without having to comply with many different rules in each country, according to E.U. documents.
