PBS’ Flirtation With Digital Media; New President Against Commercialization

The new president of PBS Paula Kerger, five weeks into her new gig, gave a speech at the Media Institue earlier today, and said that it is looking at various ways to provide its (and affiliates) shows online, but stations needs to be careful. With some these stations taking ads on their websites, Kerger said that the Internet might give stations “the ability to experiment a little more on the advertising side than we do with broadcast,” but she said that her concern is that “if we go to far, we become commercial TV. Part of the reason that public TV exists is to do the things that are not sustainable in a corporate environment.”
