Off-Portal Content Sales Gaining Traction

Teleclick.ca: Selling mobile content directly to consumers makes sense for content companies. They get to keep more of what they earn. So many small content companies are “selling their wares directly to customers through brick-and-mortar stores, and offline promotions”. For instance, San Jose-based PlayPhone Inc. does this. They sell prepaid cards – priced anywhere between $5-20 – for mobile games, ringtones, wallpapers, and music videos, through retail channels. This off-portal business model is believed to have generated sales worth $1.4 billion globally in 2005.
