Gotta love parochialism…the US behind just about everybody in terms of the ringtone market. Australia is closer to Europe in terms of premium SMS billing and so on. Still, this is a good piece on Sydney-based MobileActive and its plans to expand into the US. “This is the beginning of premium SMS in the US, they are very behind. They have been selling mobile content [in the US] — so the consumers are aware of it — but only now are they opening up their walled gardens. What they are doing right now in the US, we in Australia did in July 2003.” It makes you wonder where the US market would be if the gardens were opened up in 2003…
Another interesting point is that CEO Neil Wiles thinks that games will soon overtake ringtones as the dominate content downloaded…
