More ABC-Streaming Reactions: What Happens To Portals?

Some more reactions and analysis on ABC’s decision to stream its shows online, for free:
The ABCs of video upheaval: Portals should race to aggregate video traffic. With major networks’ video locked away in their own sites, portals must romance other video sources, including less aggressive cable networks like Lifetime. Also, Cable VOD needs an ad model.
ABC experiment faces infrastructure problems: This FT story is getting a lot of play: it says the design of the Internet is unsuited to the sort of “live” online TV services announced by Disney..If they attract a large audience, such experiments could force the industry to invest in a new infrastructure that is capable of supporting mass-market online video, fuelling a new round of spending for some of the biggest computer systems and communications networking companies.
Sorting Out Winners and Losers: Although the ads will be specially designed for the Web — and will be much shorter than traditional spots — viewers may still find the interruption irritating enough to tune out. Also, rivals were reluctant to openly criticize Disney, but several said they don’t share ABC’s optimism that the initiative won’t undercut syndication sales.
Free Net TV threatens telecoms and cable: While Disney’s move won’t disrupt the telecom and cable paid-TV business model any time soon, over the next several years these network operators will carefully track the market for a la carte Net-distributed TV programs and respond with competing services of their own.
