Indian Mobile User Base Touches 90 Million

Here are some statistics on India’s telephone subscriber base. According to a release (here PDF) by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, there are 140 million phone users in India. India’s teledensity stays at 12.73. Among them, 36 percent are land lines and 64 percent are cell phones (90 million). There are 1.3 million broadband users (>256 Kbps).
CNET puts it in perspective here. As of December 2005, there were more than 2 billion mobile connections globally, according to Informa Telecoms and Media statistics released in CTIA this April. As of last year, according to the report, 69 percent of Americans – almost 208 million – were cell phone subscribers. But less than 12 percent – about 103 million – of Africans were subscribers.
In China, according to China’s Ministry of Information February announcement, the mobile phone subscriber base has passed the 400-million mark. The ROA Group, an Asian market analyst group, predicts that China will reach the 600-million mark by 2009 and there will be 3 billion cell phone users worldwide by the end of 2008.
