@MES: At MES…

General impressions of MES…There was a lot of people and talk at MES, although I’m not sure the venue was the best place to have it. As a nightclub The Beach looks like it would rock, but as a conference center it left a fair bit to be desired. For one thing the breakout sessions were held in three tents pitched out front — it was quite windy, and what with the blowing tents and the traffic on the street it could sometimes be hard to hear the speakers. Having the event opposite the CTIA site is possibly a gutsy move for the organisers now that it is no longer an official part of the CTIA event, but I think a better venue a bit further away would be a better idea.
The Buzz: I’m not sure if it counts as buzz, but two themes were repeated over and over again… First, that there was still a lot of education that needed to be done to get the mass market aware of mobile content. We may find it hard to believe that there is anyone anywhere who doesn’t know you can play 3D games and watch live TV on your mobile handset…but there are. The second recurring theme was … how can I put this … a slight wariness of carriers. If the carriers don’t get a big enough piece of the action, they’ll block the service. I heard this over and over again, the idea that if the carriers thought they weren’t getting a big enough slice of someone’s pie they’d simply try and block the service, which would probably have disastrous effects on the service even if the block wasn’t completely effective.
