iPod Users Also Use A Lot Of Mobile Content

M:Metrics has issued a release showing research that people who use iPods also use a lot of mobile content…”Whereas iPod owners comprise only 14.4 percent of the mobile phone market, M:Metrics found that they account for 29.5 percent of those who reported listening to music on their mobile phones and 30 percent of those who watched video on their phone. Additionally, this group was almost three times more likely than the average mobile subscriber to transfer music from their computer to their mobile phone. Owners of Apple iPods were more likely than owners of other portable media devices to turn to their mobile phone for music and video.” They’re also more likely to share video and to pay for mobile content than the general population. M:Metrics said this shows there is a strong demand for a converged device, and also that mobile music wouldn’t kill the portable music player market.
I agree, and it also shows that iPods aren’t taking away from the mobile industry — it targets pretty much the same market, but that market is happy to have more than one device and service. It’s also an indication that maybe mobile music doesn’t have to match the price of iTunes to get some marketshare…although carriers and labels shouldn’t kid themselves that the market isn’t price sensitive. They have to offer good value for the price they charge.
