An interesting battle has opened up in Australia, over the rights for Australian Football League: AFL will open negotiations with telcos and media companies such as ninemsn and Yahoo!7 over the internet and mobile phone rights after incumbent Telstra knocked back an exclusive AUS$20 million-a-year deal.
Telstra has held the new media AFL rights since 2002, paying about $4 million a year, and had a first option over the 2007-2011 rights…it says the price AFL is asking is too high. Telstra could end up joining forces with an internet media company such as ninemsn or Yahoo!7 to split the mobile and internet rights.
The AFL is also prepared to consider selling the internet and mobile rights separately.
