The MIPTV confab is going on at Cannes (now, we’re not there this time) and some news coming out of it…a roundup of news below:
– New-media distribution center stage at MIPTV: “I’m scared to sell any new-media rights because I don’t know where and how they will be used in even six months’ time,” one U.S. indie producer said. “If I sell Internet rights, and the buyer then transmits them to a digital set-top box to watch on TV, my television buyer will get pissed off. The borders between these distribution streams are becoming very fluid. It’s all digital, and that makes rights deals a lot more difficult.”
– Live 8 showed web’s potential, says AOL chief: Blah blah blah…
– Mark Burnett’s Keynote: Burnett told attendees that content producers will face competition from all areas, including user generated content, which Burnett believes will just go from strength to strength and, in essence, will offer competition to professional production companies. Also, Burnett advised producers to think Internet like him. “I’m not a TV producer anymore, I’m a content producer,” Burnett said
– More MIP, Despite Strikes: French telco SFR announced Friday that it will launch four of its own mobile TV webs and has commissioned a talkshow hosted by popular Gallic TV presenter Christophe Dechavanne.
– BT signs content deals: Major announcements lined up at MIP…It has already signed up Paramount, Warner Music, the BBC and Endemol to provide programmes and on-demand content for the service.
– Red Bee buzzing with Digital Hive service: Formerly BBC Broadcast, rebranded to Red Bee, itching to make a go at it..
