This is the first time a top Yahoo functionary reacts to the Softbank-Vodafone deal in Japan and what it means for the largest internet content company. Welcoming the deal, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang said that his company would “seek opportunities to strengthen its presence as a content provider for mobile phone users”. Yang told Kyodo News in an interview, “I think it’s a very great opportunity for Yahoo Japan to be involved in the mobile business.” Yahoo Japan – although it has a unit to make mobile content – hasn’t been able to leverage it fully since it did not have partnership with a carrier. With Softbank’s acquisition of Vodafone, Yahoo Japan (where Softbank holds a stake) will immediately gain access to 15 million mobile phone users. He said the deal “will allow Yahoo Japan to have a more strategic link with a phone carrier…We’ll be able to do new things, to try new things hopefully more quickly.”
