Pod2Mob has launched a service to insert ads into podcasts automatically. “Podcasting is a pure pull medium, which means the audience is listening because they actually want to hear the programming. Pod2Mobile’s solution extends podcasters reach to wireless phones
while creating an opportunity for Madison Avenue to reach fickle audiences directly in their pocket,” said Brad Zutaut, co-founder of Pod2Mobile. “We believe we are doing for podcasting what Google’s AdSense did for online advertising.”
Big call…although the audio ads can be targeted to podcast and category that’s not quite as targeted as Google’s effort. Still, it might be a way for people to generate revenue from their podcasts. There are also graphical ads (thanks to the mobiles screen) which can be targeted to age and gender…that might be a better way to go because it doesn’t disrupt the podcast. The audio ads are up to 20 seconds at the beginning of the podcast…
UPDATE: I’ve checked with Hal Bringman about the release he sent out concerning Pod2Mobile’s ads, and he said that at the moment podcasters don’t receive any revenue from the ads and aren’t involved in placing the ads in the podcasts. He added: “We are very much open to working with podcasters to create every kind of opportunity for them. This is like national ads and then there are local ads that can be inserted, we look to the podcasters to come up with ways to create more space that we can sell and share. We’ll be announcing a program for this down the road, we’ve been engaging podcasters about how it could work.”
That’s good, but it’s a far cry from being compared to Google AdSense which was a boon not only for advertisers but for small content publishers who suddenly had a way to get some cash to support their sites.
