Sun Launches D2C Mobile Java Portal

Sun Microsystems has launched a direct-to-consumer mobile Java portal for developers to sell their Java wares on…it can be accessed by customers of 250 carriers worldwide and the payment system is powered by Bango.
“With over three billion Java Powered mobile devices in the hands of consumers worldwide, Java technology is the smart choice for developers, carriers and consumers seeking to deliver and run the most exciting mobile content. With the creation of mobile.java.com, Sun plans to provide a trusted site for consumers to discover, purchase and download mobile Java applications and to accelerate global awareness and market growth for the benefit of mobile carriers and developers,” said Mark Herring, senior director, Java Brand Programs at Sun.”
This is part of a trend of platform providers to encourage development on their platforms. The issue is that small developers can’t make all the necessary contacts with the large numbers of carriers in the world to effectively distribute their product — so the platform providers are starting to act as middlemen, making the deals with the carriers and then passing along the developers’ content.
