When everybody is talking about charging for premium content like mobile video, here is a company planning to give it away that for free. Usen Corp, Japan’s biggest cable broadcaster, plans to provide video content to cell phone users for free and intends to sustain the service by including commercials. The service is set to start on March 27. It intends to attract 3 million registered users in the first year. Each video would last no more than five minutes or so, while four short commercials will be inserted into each program. The company plans to start with around 20 programmes, and increase it to around 50 over time. Usen already has a successful Net video distribution service – called GyaO – which offers free programs with commercials. It has attracted about 7.8 million registered users ever since it started in April 2005.
