NYT has a post on a trial by “a group of payment and wireless companies” in mobile payments in the US. “This is going to happen sooner than anyone realizes,” said Dan Schatt, a Celent consultant who wrote a recent report on mobile payment technologies. “Everyone is trying to capture the consumer wallet: 2006 is the year that a lot of deals are put in place, but 2007 is the year we will actually see rollouts.”
The biggest card issues are just dipping their toe in the water at the moment and the technology was described as in its “science fair stage”, but it’s likely the technology will be mature long before the business models and relationships are. The card issuers want each phone to be hooked to a single card (or company), which isn’t a great deal for consumers…
