As expected, Google has launched a finance vertical, in beta…it is called Google Finance, of course.
Google Finance offers similar features to its rivals– quotes etc–but will also have some interactive features: interactive charts will map market data with news stories, so the effect of announcements can be tracked against the stock performance.
On competition, the Google service actually links to its competitors in areas where it lacks expertise – such as Yahoo Finance’s research reports and comparison charts.
The new service was developed in Google’s Bangalore and New York offices and its data is largely confined to North American companies. European stock data should be added once licensing deals have been agreed, Google said.
SEW: It’s not just public companies that will be covered. Google says that it has assembled profiles and information about private companies as well, through a combination of working with partners and its own crawling of the web.
Interestingly, on groups, Google has hired moderators to help ensure community guidelines are complied with. Eventually, the company hopes volunteers will take over this task.
News.com: The free service was the brainchild of several Google engineers in India who were looking for ways to improve financial information search, said Katie Stanton, a senior Google product manager.
Reuters: The new Google site relies on information from a variety of financial publishers and data providers including Reuters Group, Hoover’s, Morningstar, Interactive Data and Revere Data. Google plans to introduce advertising eventually.
Staci adds: Can Yahoo Finance survive direct competition from this? Anyone who’s already a devoted user of that or another major finance portal is unlikely to switch allegiance to the new, fairly sparse site but it will have a natural audience from the folks who already use Google search to keep up with stocks and Google News for business headlines. Google is banking on users who want “more relevant, unbiased results in a clean, uncluttered user interface.”
