BT has certainly learned the art of trickling out information on its upcoming IPTV service: it will be known as BT Vision and will now be launched in the fall this year. According to the copy on the site, “unlike other pay-TV services, there will be no mandatory monthly subscription”. In other words, unlike pay-TV services, it will be Freeview plus VOD. Users will of course require a broadband connection and initially, at least, the service will be available only to BT Broadband subscribers.
The service will come with a DVR to store up to 80 hours of programming and will provide a selection of “catch-up TV” shows from the previous week.
Netimperative: BT Vision will be enabled by the BT Hub, the device which is at the heart of BT’s strategy for the converged home. The hub will also allow wireless networking for the family’s PCs and laptops and up to five different calls to be made at the same time using voice over internet technology.
BT’s content deals for the new service include deals with Endemol and the Cartoon Network. Further content deals have been struck BBC Worldwide, Paramount and Warner Music Group, factual powerhouse National Geographic Channel and with kids’ TV firms HIT Entertainment and Nelvana.
Advanced Television: Surprisingly, BT has chosen the same name as that it used for its ill-fated cable and satellite TV unit at the end of the 1980s.
