Google Plans For Google Base, Google Payment As Online REtail Space Become Clearer; Aggressive Push

Google’s plans for Google Payment and Google Base are starting to shift from rumor to reality. The FT details Google’s efforts in the UK to encourage retailers and other businesses to enter data into Google Base to create a virtual supermarket. Google’s top European exec Nikesh Arora told the FT: “Google Base is going to have a huge impact on retailers,” explaing that Google’s research shows European retailers don’t feel competitive enough online.
While a number of major European retailers have equally major investments in online ops, one without an online presence told the FT Google’s plan would be of interest if it came with distribution of the goods.
News.com: points out that when Google Base launched in beta last november, speculation centered around competition to online classified services like eBay and Craigslist, as well as the various online classifieds connected to traditional media outlets.
I’m reminded of a comment from John Battelle following the news earlier this week that Google wants to sell online access to some books and that Amazon was offering mass online storage space: “Anyone who thinks Bezos and Google are not on a collision course is just not paying attention.”

Search Engine Roundtable: Screen grabs and an explanation of how Google Base works with Google Payments.
