UPDATE: AtomFilms Goes Mobile, But Not Cellular

Atom Films — a short-film site which is one of my favorite websites — has started offering Atom Films To Go. A promotional e-mail I received read “Download hot films to watch whenever and wherever you go with our new downloadable films and podcast! Take us with you on your PSP, iPod, PC or laptop.” I thought it was a little strange that they weren’t offered for mobile phones so I sent in some questions trying to find out why that was…and got back a standard response e-mail. “iPod and PSP are the only handheld devices that we support at this time, but we will consider your suggestion.”
I’m still not sure why, unless it’s that they want to charge for the mobile versions but haven’t worked out the payment system yet, but it seems a little dodgy to charge for one and not the others. Atom Films also makes money selling its short films on DVDs.
The problem I have with this is that mobile videos are low-hanging fruit with a revenue stream…and the company bypasses it to give content away? It doesn’t make sense…
UPDATE:
We got a message from Mika Salmi, CEO Of Atom Entertainment, explaining the deal. “This is initially an effort for portable devices, not mobile devices, maybe that wasn’t clear. Sony PSP is a sponsor (even for the ipod). Stay tuned for our effort around video and games for mobile phones. It should be pretty compelling.” The Sony sponsorship makes the lack of mobile access crystal clear…
