Manages the user-centered design process for NPR Digital Media (npr.org, on demand platforms, etc.), including: defining and implementing project methodologies in accordance with best industry practices; supervising the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data about user behavior; and fostering a creative process that results in innovative, high-quality design of interactive products and services.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field (which might also include Business Administration, Communication Design, Marketing, Computer Science, or Cognitive Science); specific study on the Human-Computer Interaction/Human Factors, Software Engineering, and/or Project Management is highly desirable. Minimum seven to ten years experience in project management, design, and/or development of Web-based applications; experience in one of more of the following environments is desirable: online publishing, digital media, e-commerce, online financial services or online retail services; five years senior management experience accompanied by proven skills in leading and motivating teams in a dynamic, high-stress environment; experience negotiating contracts and managing relationships with outside vendors; experience working in a highly collaborative environment where all team members are invited to provide input to major decisions; ability to communicate at all levels of the organization (including senior management and peer groups) on issues of strategy and ongoing operations; expert familiarity with the tools and processes of project management including the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK); expert familiarity with current techniques and practices of software requirements definition, user centered design, and usability analysis; strong familiarity with web analytics tools including server-side and client-side measurement methods; skilled use of project management software (Microsoft Project), flowchart/wireframing and process documentation software (Microsoft Visio), and standard office applications (Microsoft Office); actionable knowledge of the digital media landscape including current industry and user trends, emerging technologies, and standards; strong familiarity with current technologies involved in Internet-based applications including client-side (HTML, javascript, CSS) server-side technologies (PHP, ASP, Java, relational databases), and related standards (XML, RSS, Section 508/WAI, Dublin Core); ability to analyze both quantitative and qualitative data and present findings and recommendations; strong oral and written communication skills, to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences; ability to effectively and efficiently set priorities and handle multiple assignments in a face-paced, deadline-driven environment; demonstrated ability to work well independently, or on a team, always showing respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system; and ability to engender trust and establish actionable consensus among these constituencies.
