The EU Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding has given a speech at CeBIT saying that the European Commission needed to make a quick decision on harmonizing mobile TV across Europe. “I am more and more convinced that we cannot wait until 2012 to deploy new services such as mobile TV on a large scale. We cannot afford to sleep on this. Actions are already well underway outside Europe. That is why we should act now to allocate at least some common European spectrum bandwidths for Mobile TV,” she said.
She states that the system needs to be harmonized across Europe so that travellers can use the service no matter which country they go to… for that to happen the industry has to agree on a standard — or at least reduce the options to a couple. But the main need is to make spectrum available soon so that the services can be rolled out…rather than having to wait until 2012.
However, you know what bureaucracy is like…”Reding said that by early next year she will propose specific further steps to “unlock the potential of mobile TV.” I’m guessing the industry is seeking spectrum and guidelines before then, preferably in the next few months. In many countries they’ve already completed trials and are keen to launch the service.
