Telstra DVD Rentals Via 3G

Before you get too excited, this isn’t renting DVDs to watch on mobile phones but using mobile phones to rent DVDs to watch at home. Telstra’s Bigpond Movies service allows you to rent DVDs online, which are then delivered to your home. When you return them the next DVD in your queue is sent to you. The online service is now available on 3G handsets (I’m assuming it’s available on all 3G handsets and not just ones using the Telstra service) with the help of AgentArts. “The 3G service allows BigPond Movies subscribers to access all core functionality of the online movie rental service via 3G devices, including renting titles, rental queue changes, return notifications, as well as browsing video preview trailers, personalized video and video download recommendations and community generated lists.”
This is actually a pretty good feature — when you have those minutes spare that seem to be when mobile content is used you can check your account, see previews and so on. I don’t think it’s the kind of thing you’d pay for (the press release we were sent made no mention of charges) but I can see the attraction of the service. “AgentArts’ core recommendation, personalization and community technology is integrated across a number of Telstra services including BigPond movies, Bigpond video downloads, BigPond music and BigPond games.” As an FYI the BigPond movie service started offering digital downloads a few weeks ago.
