Common-Man Idol In Finland

The Finnish version of mobile karaoke has gotten a huge boost by being linked in with the popular TV show Pop Idol…dubbed “Jokamiehen Idols” (literally “the common man’s Idols”) normal people (well, outwardly normal) sing into phones and other people then vote on how good they are. The good thing for the mobile industry is the response generated…
“Finland has a population of only 5 million people. 1,862 brave Finns sang songs into Mobile Karaoke to join into this common man’s Idols contest. 150,000 separate individuals called in to listen to these songs, to vote on them ! And the whole activity generated 1.95 MILLION separate listening/voting sessions in Finland. More than the total traffic generated by the voting activities of the “real” Finnish Idols show on TV.” Operators are going to love that.
I agree that this is likely to become a standard part of the global Pop Idol format, and other shows in the genre will (or should) start looking at ways to get their audience to interact rather than just SMS. Maybe Big Brother could get its audience to video and photograph losing contestents papparazzi style and post the results on the web…continue the horror. (via MobHappy)
