There’s been a lot of hype lately about the dangers mobile phones pose to children, particularly in things like chat rooms, and the obviousl solution is to moderate them. With the problem that teenagers don’t like to be moderated.
MadDogMobile is a site targeting 13-19 year-olds and is attempting to attract them with an “application that turns your phone into an MP3 player”. I was under the impression that handsets that could store MP3s had a player imbedded, maybe I was wrong. Anyway, the application scans the mobile for MP3s and also allows files to be transfered between a PC and the phone.
There’s some viral marketing going on with this…”The Mad Dog Player is free for members who have collected 400 reward points on the website. Reward points called ‘bones’ are easily earned by signing up, getting people to join the site, entering competitions and other activities. Bones reward points can be swapped for the Mad Dog Player, wallpapers and other cool freebies.”
However, the interesting part (returning to the headline of this post) is that Mad Dog has monitored chat rooms, which are promoted as “protecting members from nasty neighbours and hidden holes. His professional moderators are on hand at a touch of the “dodgy” button and they keep a close eye on what’s happening on the site around the clock.” From the release I also got the impression the moderator was there to watch out for scams, but a more careful reading makes me think its refering to Mad Dog itself.
I’m not sure what a “hidden hole” is, but I think the language used makes it more appealing to teens…
