I-play has made a mobile game based on the TV series 24. Imaginatively dubbed 24 The Mobile Game it’s actually a series of mini-games through which players control Jack Bauer and co in order to stop a Korean terrorist ring. The idea is to complete the mini-games as fast as possible, which creates the tension of the TV series. The interesting thing is the successful combination of casual gaming with branded games — currently the two big categories in the mobile games market. Most branded games I’ve come across haven’t been casual games. There is one complaint: “Overall, though, the mini-games lack originality and could have been branded with the wrappings of other action blockbuster franchises, such as Mission Impossible.” I don’t doubt that — with a few tweaks and a change of graphics — that is exactly what will happen. In which case differentiation could be achieved by adding in some clips from the original show, and maybe winning some mobile content.
