Capcom Senior Vice President and mobile General Manager Midori Yuasa has said that Capcom will spend 2006 working their way into the mobile space and educating carriers on the brand strength of their games — how do you prove to geriatric carrier execs that Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins has a cult following? I’d have trouble…my generation just knows it automatically.
I’m also very impressed with Capcom’s plan to bring episodic games to mobiles with Phoenix Wright, a court-room game originally released on the DS.
“The game is episodic, so this presented us with a unique opportunity,” said Yuasa. “Starting in the summer we’re going to begin releasing exclusive cases or chapters, once a month. The specifics will depend on the carrier. On one you might pay a monthly subscription fee and then receive your new case once a month, but on another you might be able to choose which cases to purchase from a menu. The ‘game’ would serve more like a ‘player’ that new cases could be inserted into. Cases will be exclusive to the mobile platform.”
This is so obvious I’m still amazed that it isn’t the main way of selling mobile games — you the game and the episodes cheaply and people will keep buying them — it’s better to sell twelve $2 games than one $6 game. Of course, the game would actually have to be good and compelling and keep people’s interest…
In other game news, Gameloft has signed a deal with SK Telecom to distribute games through the carriers portal.
And Nokia has shipped Civilisation for the Ngage. There’s a classic…I just bought Civ IV but I don’t have a good enough graphics card…
