Canadian telco Bell Canada has acquired a majority interest in Puretracks, a local music downloading service. Terms were not disclosed. The minority shareholders in Puretracks now include content providers such as Sony, Standard Broadcasting, EMI, and Universal Music Group.
Puretracks was launched in October 2003 by Moontaxi and since that time has grown by developing white label partnerships with Internet service providers such as Bell and Telus and retailers such as Best Buy. Best Buy operates the Puretracks offering under the brand Bonfire.
The company expanded into the U.S in October 2004 and currently offers about 1 million songs for download.
