Russian anti-virus specialist Kaspersky Lab (which has been known to hype security “threats”) has reported evidence of the first mobile phone trojan which targets J2ME devices…dubbed Redbrowser.A the trojan works by telling users it sends free SMS messages as part of its normal operation (which is to give WAP access to non-WAP phones), and then sending premium messages which cost $5-6 each. F-secure has a blog entry which explains it in more detail, and with screen caps.
Note that the trojan isn’t in the wild, people have to actively download and run it, and it’s currently only in Russian — so it’s not a real big threat. The biggest problem with these things is to make people wary of mobile content…
