SMS.ac is back in the news again, in a general story on the company. Despite being “one of those right- place, right-time, right-technology companies that has nearly all the elements for colossal success” the company has trouble with bad press, with people complaining about receiving premium SMS messages they don’t want. Greg Wilfahrt, executive vice president for SMS.ac, claims it’s a problem of misperception. It could be that — out of the millions of customers SMS.ac claims only a vocal handful write their complaints on the net (some complainants claim to be ex-employees). To my knowledge there hasn’t been enough official complaints about SMS.ac to warrant investigation by a regulatory body. That being said, often complaints like this have a basis, such as the furore over Nokia’s defective screens a few years ago.
Sprint’s not helping either…”As recently as June, the U.S. carrier Sprint reported that its business with SMS.ac had “exceeded our original expectations.” Now Sprint says, without explanation, it no longer does business with SMS.ac.”
Correction: IHT has issued a “clarification” concerning the the comment that Sprint no longer does business with SMS.ac… “A Sprint spokeswoman has since clarified earlier remarks that the company “no longer works with SMS.ac” to say that Sprint no longer offers SMS.ac’s messaging as part of its Vision service, but that it still works with SMS.ac through third-party aggregators.”
