InfoWorld: Soon after Opera Software announced that they are setting up an India office soon, there is another bit of information from the web browser company. It’s that they will talk to mobile phone and content companies for selling their ware. “We will also talk to content providers and anyone trying to do an (Internet) device in India,” said Jon S. von Tetzchner, Opera’s (Overview, Articles, Company) chief executive officer, said in an interview.
India is a huge market with a lot of tech-savvy buyers, von Tetzchner said. In October, Opera introduced versions of its browser in Hindi and Punjabi, two key languages in the country. The browsers run on both Linux (Overview, Articles, Company) and Microsoft’s (Profile, Products, Articles) Windows operating system.
Norway-based Opera is targeting both mobile phones users and PC users in India, von Tetzchner said. The desktop market is important to it because of both the revenue and the visibility it offers, he said. In markets where Opera has a strong desktop presence it has been easier to get business from other markets such as mobile phones, von Tetzchner said. However, mobile cannot be ignored since it has more than 80 million subscribers as of January 2006.
