Here’s a blast from the past…Commodore International — the maker of the old Vic 20’s and Commodore 64’s that most of us started out with — is still tottering along and taking a running jump at the mobile market. The company plans to launch “a line of touch screen computers in mobile phone and game retailers across Europe during 2006″, and is teaming up with The Content Factory to do so.
“We believe that the revolution in handheld media devices demand a variety of simple, user-friendly ways for consumers to download content. We believe that offering this content in retail stores on a 17 inch touch screen will help encourage consumers to try mobile games as well as other types of content,” said Bala Keilman, CEO of Commodore Gaming.
A quick look at the Commodore website shows the old company is currently focused on portable music players and a music store, with some home entertainment stuff thrown in. Although the article talks about old Commodore content I’m pretty sure the product being refered to is The Commodore MediaTower, which is a kiosk for mobile content…it lists full-track music, games, ringtones and wallpapers but there’s no reason it can’t be any stand-alone application.
UPDATE: Over at GameDaily.biz has clarified that the intended mobile game business of Commodore is in addition to the MediaTowers, and that Telcogames will be the “preferred supplier of mobile games content”.
