MTV: Director, Music Research, NYC

The role of the Director of Music Research is to lead in all aspects of music research and serve as a chief advisor to all departments. This includes providing strategic insight into how the youth audience accesses and uses music, defining MTV’s competitive set on all platforms, uncovering opportunities to build MTV’s music presences, and communicating MTV’s music successes.

Responsibilities:

– Uncover strategic opportunities to increase MTV’s music connection with its consumers.

– Competitive surveillance of music related sites and touch points across all media including present and emerging platforms

– Unearth and communicate trends in the way people are accessing and using music

– Articulate the power of MTV’s multiple screens to demonstrate our competitive advantage with the labels.

– Devise tools to correlate artists’ media exposure on MTV to album sales.

– Support press, by crafting music stories that will help position MTV properties in a positive light for both the consumer and trade press

– Serve as the face of MTV Music Research for public forums

– Uncover sales opportunities linked to music that can help generate revenue

– Build an infrastructure that will communicate on an on-going basis to inform the organization on key metrics including MTV’s performance vs. key competitors and artists’ cross platform performance.

– Partner with researchers across the MTV organization to ensure that music is integrated into all research analyses and communication.

– Develop new ways of tracking/measuring artists to get a better understanding not only the size of their fan base, but also how they connect with youth population at large.

Required Qualifications:

– 6+ years of experience in the music industry preferably music media

– Working knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies across media platforms, particularly television and online.

– Experience in emerging platforms

– Self-starter with an ability to work with and communicate to senior level management as well as industry executives

–Understanding of Nielsen television ratings and media metrics online systems a plus.
