Son Sues Redstone For Fair Share; Could Make Life Complicated for Mogul, Viacom, CBS

Brent Redstone, the Redstone you don’t hear much about, is trying to force his father Sumner — aka chairman of Viacom and CBS– to break up the empire that’s been accumulated under the auspices of National Amusements. As Geraldine Fabrikant carefully lays out, Brent, a former ADA, claims that his father hasn’t made decisions in the best interests of National Amusements and that he is being treated unfairly in favor of his sister Shari, who is chairmanman of National and clearly has been tagged as their father’s successor. He wants the company dissolved so he can get access to his one-sixth interest, estimated at $1.3 billion.
I won’t go into all the details here; most important for our concerns, the legal process could make life complicated for Viacom and CBS and uncomfortable for Sumner Redstone, but it’s unlikely to cause any serious disruption.
