The Register has an interesting story up about the current showdown between China and Qualcomm over patents that may include part of the TD-SCDMA technology. So far Qualcomm has made any official demands to the Chinese, and the article indicates the Chinese companies aren’t too worried about any claims Qualcomm may have.
Of course, the whole point of TD-SCDMA was to avoid paying large amounts of royalties to Qualcomm and European vendors, and if the Chinese companies which developed TD-SCDMA are more restrained in their royalty demands TD-SCDMA could get a price boost its fight to enter other countries.
“The Chinese are mindful that at the turn of the last century, American domestic growth was helped by a successful combination of protectionism and IP “theft” – so what’s sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander.”
