The New York Times Company’s new Research and Development unit is looking for a unique individual to serve as a Creative Technologist. S/he will be highly creative and have the hands-on ability develop Internet software applications that integrate with consumer devices. We are looking for someone with an innate curiosity and a passion for innovation; someone who is filled with inventive new ideas, and who has the ability single-handedly to render these ideas into working models. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to communicate complex technological concepts into plain language for non-technical people.
Responsibilities:
– Deeply understand The New York Times Company’s portfolio of brands and how these brands can be extended, enriched and vivified by new software applications connected to the Internet and other consumer devices.
– Conceptualize and develop high-level plans for innovative digital media products and services; some of these will be designed to extend the existing brands of the New York Times Company and some will not.
– Build prototypes of these new product/service concepts using commercially available hardware and software tools; work in collaboration with technologists in the R&D group as required.
– Develop relationships with leading companies and universities in the digital media space for potential business, partnerships and technical collaboration.
– Stretch the envelope of our thinking about what media will become in the next 3 to 5 years and how people will use media for news, information and entertainment.
Requirements:
– Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
– Proven ability to use technology creatively – as a painter uses brush and canvas.
– Strong understanding of one or more of the following areas: Web development and publishing, networked computing, database architecture and data extraction; search technology; digital video hardware and software.
– Ability to generate creative product concepts and communicate those concepts through the hands-on creation of working prototypes.
– Strong working knowledge of three or more of the following programming languages is required: Perl, PHP, Javascript, AJAX, MySQL, Oracle.
– A track record of achieving commercial success from creative technological endeavors is a plus.
