@ Media Summit NYC: State of the Industry, From Media Toolheads: Audio

It was an interesting day one closing panel at the Media Summit in NYC…one which had some powerhouse names on it. Included Michael Wolf, COO, MTV Networks; William Cella, CEO, MAGNA Global Worldwide; Andrew Lippman, Senior Research Scientist, Director, Digital Life, MIT Media Lab; Geoffrey Dodge, Publisher, BusinessWeek; and moderated by the acerbically funny Kevin Roberts, CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi.

It was one of those “The future, Conan?” kind of panel, and prognostications has everything from “citizens media” (from Dodge) to the future of TV. And oh, the resurgence of poker.

Some choice lines:

– Kevin Roberts: We increasingly live in a [media] world which is more “and-and” [not either-or].

– Michael Wolf: “Media and entertainment companies are ultimately about experiences, they are not about technology. As much as everyone wants media and technology to come together, we at MTV think that everyone just wants to be us, and the good news is we’re the only people who can be us. We have been us for close to 30 years now.” Hence the word toolheads in the headline…

– Geoff Dodge: How do we embrace citizen journalism, how do we monetize it…how do we as marketers make use of it?

– William Cella: One of the industries that is not there yet, and is not considered sexy, but will be in a few years is outdoors. When outdoor becomes digitized, it is going to be awesome.
