@ Media Summit NYC: Some Buzz From There

So if you’re wondering why I haven’t posted more from the Media Summit in NYC, well, it was a rather disappointing day one. Doing it at the McGraw-Hill building is not the best of ideas if you want to foster interaction, but more on that below. Some buzz I picked up while speaking to people:

Socializr’s Raising About Half a Million Funding: A new stealth social network, Socializr, founded by Friendster founder Jonathan Abrams, is raising about $0.5 million seed funding, and has raise about $0.35 million out of that, a birdie told me at the conf.

– Speaking of Friendster, I heard this suggestion from someone, regarding the woes that have befallen the company (no buyers, etc): Friendster is the biggest social network in Philippines, so why not sell the site to someone there and hopefully they’ll be able to extract some value out of it. Surely someone in the country has $5 million to spare?

– Oh, this is going to be fun: AOL’s new offices in LA, where they are basing their video operations, are in the words of someone who has been there, “completely sick”. Opulence personified, with personal bathroom and even showers in some of the office rooms. Curved ceilings etc…now we know what ICahn was bitchin’ about.

– McGraw Hill building sucks, and conference attendees weren’t happy with the runaround. Why? Well, one part of the conference is on mezzanine floor, and another is on 50th floor, for which you have to go down, pass through security, and then catch an elevator up to 50th floor. On top of that, there is no cell reception on the floor, and of course, no Wi-Fi.

– Thanks for the plug: On the Web 2.0 panel (yes, they can do it in NYC too), the moderator Brian Glicklich, VP of Interactive Services at Premiere Radio Networks, gave us a big plug, or so I heard from about 50 people afterwards. I left 20 mins into the panel coz I had a meeting, but heard later he said some very nice things about us. Thanks Brian…we’re getting a bunch of new subscribers, and the plug might have something to do with it.
