Few blog launches get this kind of attention … The latest Nick Denton effort, Valleywag.com, aims to apply the Gawker-Wonkette-Defamer formula of sarcasm, reporting and gossip to Silicon Valley. It’s written by Nick Douglas, who honed his snarky blog skills at Blogebrity.com. The Chron tries to explain why Dentons’ blogs matter: “What has made the other Gawker sites noteworthy isn’t just the number of people reading, but the quality of clientele. You may have never heard of Defamer, Gawker and Wonkette but all of the biggest Hollywood agents, New York literary titans and rising-star politicians respect and fear the sites. Even if you never check out Valleywag, you can bet that Steve Jobs will.”
Not so sure about that last assertion but the real reason may be the willingness to publish what the usual suspects don’t — or can’t — even think about. That doesn’t automatically make it worth reading, of course.
Jason Calacanis just can’t resist adding his take: “I never believed Nick when he told me he wouldn’t sell Gawker (especially not after all my pals at the big portals told me that he was meeting with them). However, watching Valleywag alienate 90% of the industry over the past couple of days in such a personal and vicious way, Nick’s convinced me that he could really care less. … Say what you will about Denton, the dude really doesn’t care what people think of him. I mean, how long can Gawker Media have a business relationship with Yahoo or Google at this rate?”
