Asia Media: The big media debate about the onslaught of the new media like Internet and mobile, and also how the shrinking margins and spiralling costs would derail “good journalism” nurtured by big newspapers. The article written by Cheong Yip Seng, editor-in-chief of the English and Malay Newspapers Division of Singapore Press Holdings, sums up the concerns of the WSJs and NYTs. Seng attended the recent World Economic Forum summit in Davos, where he witnessed a session on media. He says:
A group of media editors and CEOs huddled for a day to ponder the future of news. Will the quality journalism they take pride in practising today continue to have the resources needed to nourish it?
I think the companies who adapt to the changing technologies and who arE aware of the trends in readership will not have a big problem going forward. But there are traditional media houses who are still blind to these trends, and if they still hold on to their jurassic business models, they are bound to lose the young and emerging readership.
