Siemens has developed an “augmented reality (AR) football game for mobile phones” in preparation for the World Cup (Go Aussies).
“Kick Real allows players to take virtual penalty kicks by aiming a mobile camera phone at their foot while kicking an imaginary ball.” The technology was used in C-Lab (the software foundry of Siemens) and was originally used to “train gas installers through employees sending pictures of the malfunctioning part to a central database that would then return installation instructions”. Mobile games have been mentioned in passing in several news stories, such as this NYT piece about the lacklustre 2005 the game industry had…”Amid these concerns, there was also good news. For many software companies, the decline in sales of console games was offset by an increase in sales of games for portable devices. Such games can be more profitable, because development costs are generally much lower.”
The Economic Times in India has an interesting article on companies settling copyright infringement disputes between themselves rather than going to court because they don’t want to be seen as litigious…it also mentions that “more Indian consumers are beginning to discover gaming as a form of entertainment through the mobile medium, thanks to its amazing reach and growth in the country.”
