Korea’s Ministry of Information and Communication has said it will cooperate with India’s Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Tata Group and Airtel, to launch T-DMB services in India. The advantage for T-DMB is that India uses the same bandwidth (Band-III) for digital audio broadcasting as Korea does, so “immediate commercial services will be possible once the Indian government permits full-blown T-DMB services”. I assume some form of infrastructure will have to be put in place…
A trial is expected to be launched by mid-February.
This move follows a pact with China on T-DMB, and it looks like Korea may be ahead of the game in these teritories. Even if it loses out in Europe and the Americas if the two biggest markets in the world have T-DMB as their main mobile TV broadcasting system it is going to be successful.
And an interesting paragraph: “Further, the Information Ministry recently agreed to cooperate with “World DAB Forum,” a London-based international organization for promoting digital broadcasting, to enter the Indian market.” (via our sister site ContentSutra)
