Updated, read below: Newspaper giant Knight Ridder reported lower Q4 profits: $83.3 million compared to $107.2 million in the year-ago quarter. Revenues rose 3.1% to $820 million from $795.5 million.
On the online side, things are rosier: Knight Ridder Digital’s revenue of $45.5 million was up 55.4% for the quarter; KRD annual revenue of $164.5 million was up 54.5% for the year.
MarketWatch: During the conference call, Chairman Tony Ridder declined comment on the sale. “As you all understand, it takes time and we do not intend to talk about either the process or the participants while it is ongoing,” he said.

Knight-Ridder’s online ad revenue for Q4 was 45.5 million, an increase of 16.2 million. Pro forma 2005 advertising revenue was 164.5 million, an increase of 54.5% over 2004 results…Recruitment, its largest revenue category, was strong in Q4, with revenue totaling 23.4 million, 76% higher than in Q4 of last year.
In the Q&A, the company clarified that it is not lookng at any acquisitions now, until they figure out their future…as Tony Ridder said in the call: “Launches, yes. Acquisitions, no.”
