Updated, read below: Yahoo’s rather bold though relatively low-risk (in scale, compared to say U.S. operations) has launched: Yahoo7 is a joint venture between the Seven Network and Yahoo Australia and New Zealand, and will challenge Australia’s biggest portal ninemsn.
Yahoo7 was first announced in early December and both companies have since been busy rebranding its Web site, which today launched at www.yahoo7.com.au, replacing Yahoo’s previous Australia and New Zealand portal.
Yahoo senior VP, international operations, John Marcom will chair the JV company.
Updated: The joint venture will consider bidding for the AFL (Australian Football League) internet rights this year if the league does not strike a new deal with Telstra. The AFL holds the rights for AUS$5 million a year contract over internet and mobile rights. According to analysts, AFL’s internet and mobile rights could be worth at least AUS$20 million a year over a five-year period, beginning in 2007.
