Yahoo Takes Lead In Mobile Portal Recognition

M:Metrics has found that Yahoo! is the most popular mobile content brand in the United States. “During the quarter ended December 2005, 12.8 million U.S. mobile subscribers accessed Yahoo‘s services in an average month — 4 million more than second-place AOL. MSN and Google follow, with about 7 million subscribers accessing their mobile offerings each month during the fourth quarter.”
AOL did so well because of its instant messaging service — 89% of its mobile reach was AIM users. Yahoo users are more likely to access other services such as news, maps and search in addition to Yahoo IM, which is used by 73 percent of those who used Yahoo branded services.
In mobile search Google narrowly beat Yahoo, but in the area of maps and directories Yahoo narrowly beat Google and MapQuest.

The Guardian writer scored an interview with Yahoo CEO Terry Semel before his keynote at CES, with some interesting answers on where Yahoo plans to go (mobile) and how it stands out from its competitors (“we’re not a one-trick pony”). A very good interview if you want to know about Yahoo, and Semel’s optimism seems to be supported by this M:Metrics research.
