Skype To Sell Ringtones From Warner

I’ve expressed skepticism about Skype’s ability to sell ringtones through its VOIP service, and I still do, but it seems that others like Warner Music Group are pretty bullish on it. Well, at least it is another distribution outlet, if nothing else.
Now comes the news that WMG has licensed its catalog for ringtone sale on Skype.
Skype is expected to sell the ringtones — 30-second song snippets that sound off when a call comes in — for $1.50 each. The deal, which is the first of its kind for both companies, will kick in within two months. This is a blanket license for the whole catalog, and Skype will initially promote Madonna as a “featured artist,” giving ringtones from her most recent album prominent placement on its online store.
Going ahead, Skype expects to pursue content deals with other music companies, as well as other entertainment sources, as a way of allowing its customers to personalize their calling experience.
