MGM has names industry veteran Rick Sands as its COO in the second high-profile hire in recent months that signals efforts to revitalize itself. Sands sees new opportunities for film and TV distribution via the Web or handheld electronic gadgets as prime arenas for future industry growth. MGM owns more than 4,000 film titles including lucrative franchises such as the James Bond and Pink Panther movies. Its library also includes over 10,400 TV shows.
Sands was most recently the president and COO of DreamWorks SKG and before that he was COO for Miramax Films.
Hollywood Reporter: “What we have right now I think is the most important collection of intellectual property rights in the industry..Initially, what we all need to evaluate is how to best maximize the value of all those rights throughout all media, whether it’s new media or existing media.”
